When a band is selected “Top 10 live acts of the year” by glitterballnyc it really has to be something special. That’s the case for Hess Is More. A transatlantic music ensemble. 7 international musicians around Danish composer and drummer Mikkel Hess.

Hess is a composer of music for film, theatre and ballet. Latest he was nominated for the prestigious Robert Award and Carl Award with his score for the feature film “When Animals Dream“.
Bearsong and Youarenotaprimate were arranged during the group’s residency at Clocktower Gallery in downtown New York. Recorded Live to Tape and mixed by Andrew Raposo (Midnight Magic /Hercules & Love Affair / DFA) at Midnight Sun Studios in Greenpoint.

These seven musicians, with their unique instrumentation and unorthodox arrangements create a very danceable yet at times puzzling sound. Melodies with unusual developments, basslines that have their roots in late 1970 jazz funk. Youarenotaprimate is an orgy of No Wave drums, Afrobeat-bassline and distorted rhode pianos. The lyrics can haunt you for days: „You are not a primate, you are not Maharishi either, but in between there is someone called yourself“. Hess Is More have a hugh fanbase already in New York’s undergound music scene. People like James Murphy of DFA, Pitchfork’s favourite avantgarde pop musician Lorna Dune and Lowbrow Reader editor Jay Ruttenberg are big fans of their live shows. Pips from Petty Nobles Collective just wrote this nice quote: “I believe I just witnessed the future of live dance music“.

Now on Gomma: The solo project of Nancy Whang of LCD Soundsystem. After years as vocalist and keyboarder in James Murphy’s superband finally Nancy comes up with an own project: 4 cover versions of big songs from the 70ies. Produced by some big names of today’s electronic scene: Audiojack, Etienne de Crecy, Bonar Bradberry, Drop Out Orchestra and The Revenge.

The first single is a rework of Dennis Parker’s Like An Eagle. Audiojack transformed the Disco classic into a melancholic, space techno odyssey. The remix by Toy Tonics acts Black Loops is also a bomb!

The seed to what became HOTLANE was unconsciously planted a long time ago on the disco floors of Berlins legendary nightlife.
Jack Tennis who had already made his name in the underground scene as a house and disco cat as well as producer of funky remixes was hanging out at the same bars and clubs as the new arrived Stockholmer Agnes Linn, who just started off as a DJ, model, illustrator and actress in her new hometown.
They became friends of the nightlife and without being aware of each other’s music making home business, mutual friend Ingrid Kritscher – head of the iconic Broken Hearts Club – connected them since she knew Jack Tennis was looking for a female singer for some of his tunes. To Agnes it sounded more than tempting since she can’t keep her fingers off trying out new things. After playing guitar and drums at younger age singing was quite new to her.
And sim salalabim, Agnes sent some sketches of melodies for each song and they decided to meet up and first then it became clear who the person behind the tracks and emails was. Which made everything even greater.

HOTLANE is not just a band but a mood and an experiment for the two main persons involved. Later on they involved more people after joining the label of cool, Gomma Records and gained fans from all over the world, featured on blogs in various languages, which makes them happy and sentimental in a very good way.
The music should be a soundtrack to peoples lives and make people wanna slowly move their hips or drive a car or fall in love or make sporty activities.
Even before HOTLANE celebrated their first birthday, they had live shows scheduled for Murkudis, Closed, Swergie together with Icona Pop, Villa Stuck, heyshops and with the single debut “On My Own” 2014 they gained support from well known DJs as James Curd, Theatre of Delays, DJ Steef, Ricardo Baez and top league designers as Elie Saab.

Inspiration comes from a combination of early 80s music and 70s disco, glamour, classic films, mellow photography, dramatic landscapes, old video material, bad album covers and awkward family photos.
It‘s also musically inspired by: Fleetwood Mac, Laid Back, James Murphy, Donna Summer, Diana Ross, Chromatics, Chromeo, Glass Candy, Nicholas
Jaar, scandinavian disco, french house, german techno, english pop, Breakbot, Aeroplane, The Revenge, etc

The Barking Dogs are the two italian dudes who run Italy’s finest record shop SERENDEEPITY in Milano. They organize some of the best partys in the north of Italy, sell the freshest records and produce the most absurd techno records you find in the shelfs these days. From James Murphy to Andy Weatherhall.. the have big fans all around the world. And their 2 EPs on Gomma caused some euphoric reactions not only among techno fans. Beeing owners of a hugh records store you can be sure the boys play an selection of music that you can’t hear anywhere else.

Our little Gomma label is currently making a little transformation: originally we only released the music of friends and new yet unknown talents… but since a few months we are getting this huge attention not only from all the cool blogs (yes..thanks guys!) but also from a lot of  already more established musicians. In fact, after James Murphy (DFA), Nick McCarthy (Franz Ferdinand) and Soulwax participated on Gomma releases, now we have a second wave of BIG guys that asked us to release their projects. Next to The Phenomenal Handclap Band (which includes members of TV On The Radio, John Spencer and others) now German super group DIE STERNE asked MATHIAS MODICA from MUNK to produce their new music and put out a 3 track E.P on Gomma.

DIE STERNE are part of the so called “Hamburger Schule”….Blumfeld and Tocotronic are other bands that were part of this wave of German pop music. These bands from Hamburg defined a quite intellectual, new attitude back in the 90ies. DIE STERNE are very well known in Germany…EVERYBODY loves them… so now its fun that they asked us to do this record….but of course: we are honored….. and their new style which was created by Mathias …our Munkyboy from Marseille….is …don’t know…maybe imagine DFA recording their stuff with a London garage punk band, some weirdo east European old school printing machine noises and German lyrics…
Anyway: The E.P. went straight to number 1 in the Amazon download genre charts in Germany. Yeah…

Munk is Mathias Modica. “One of the most forward thinking minds in the German producer scene” (Pitchfork).
Mathias released 3 Munk albums on his own labels Gomma & Toy Tonics and several EPs on labels like Correspondant, Local Talk, Mule Musiq and Exploited.
He did collaboration singles with Rebolledo from Pachanga Boys, James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem, Asia Argento, Peaches. He is a DJ, vinyl collector, pianoplayer, producer and owner of new house label Toy Tonics and Gomma records: „Germany’s most interesting electronic music label“ (The NME).

Munk has a quite unique approch in music. It’s difficult to pin him down to one special scene or musical style. He always tries to find a new, different approach to electronic music. This reflects also his politics on his labels Gomma and Toy Tonics. Besides his own music he has released the debuts of some of the most interesting artists of the past years on Gomma and Toy Tonics: The Danish indiedisco group WhoMadeWho who released three albums on Gomma before getting signed by Kompakt, Daniel Avery’s first singles before he did his album on Erol Alkan’s Phantasy label, Franz Ferdinand’s Nick McCarthy’s solo project Box Codax before he started his band Franz Ferdinand, Canadian songwriter Mocky’s debut album before he wrote hits for Feist, Nu–Disco pioneer Moullinex’ debut album, the Casablanca Project with Nancy Whang of LCD Soundsystem.

Upcoming projects:

Currently Mathias is travelling as a DJ all around the world and is recording two new albums: an experimental jazz album and an electronic project.
He and his two companions at Gomma are developing the new sublabel Toy Tonics. A dance music label that Beatport chose as one of the „10 labels to watch in 2015“.
In April, they will release a Gomma compilation with new forms of electronic pop music under the name of “Mushroom House” as well as a new edition of the Gomma magazine which was developed in cooperation with the German contemporary art museum Haus der Kunst.

Hi friends, thanks for liking Gomma. We are a music (and graphic) collective. Based in Munich and led by Mathias Modica (aka Munk). The Gomma crew consists of musicians, DJs, bands, graphic designers from Germany, France, Italy, UK, Denmark and the USA.

Gomma is part of this new, little scene of labels who are crossing between club music, independent art and alternative fashion. DFA Records in New York, Kitsune and Ed Banger in Paris, Modular in Australia… different music, but similar ideas. Releasing not only new music, but creating fresh things in pop culture.

At Gomma we try to develop some different eclectic musical languages –- mixing electronic production and “real” instruments. Combining 70ies disco and psychedelic sounds with 90ies Techno, Electronica, House and Indie Pop. Always trying to stay away from the latest trends but inventing new ideas in music.

MUNK is the project of Italo – Germany DJ, producer, pianoman and globetrotter Mathias MODICA – one of the two guys behind GOMMA RECORDS.

MUNK has been  described as the “…the German DFA” by Londons NME magazine and “Germany’s king of fucked up disco” by VICE. The MUNK debut album APERITIVO was released in 2005. UK’s i – D magazine defined it as “a superb futuristic mix of space disco and psychedelic soul”.
The main hit was the disco anthem “Kick out the chairs!” which featured long time Gomma fan JAMES MURPHY from DFA on vocals.

The new MUNK album CLOUDBUSTER includes 3 songs with italian leading actress ASIA ARGENTO (known from the last Sofia Coppola and Abel Ferrara movies.) and Matty Safer (The Rapture).
The first single will be ” Live Fast! Die Old!” featuring Asia Argento. The song got huge props by ED BANGER boss BUSY P. He wanted to do an own version of the song. His version and remixes by THE JUAN MACLEAN (DFA), HEADMAN, WHOMADEWHO and others will be coming up in may.

MUNK now is a 4 person live band! The band consists of Mathias Modica and POLLYESTER, BEN MONO and DOC DOHLE from Berlin. Check videos of MUNK LIVE and of the singles on YOUTUBE.

After the big hit KICK OUT THE CHAIRS! with James Murphy from 2005 finally the new MUNK album CLOUDBUSTER comes up in June 2009. The first single LIVE FAST DIE OLD is a PIANO DISCO track which features Italian actress ASIA ARGENTO.

These first remixes have been done by DFA’s THE JUAN MACLEAN, Gomma’s very own HEADMAN and rising DJANE star on the DiscoTech scene MARAL SALMASSI.

The JuanMacLean delivers a Piano House piece which could easily be THE ANTHEM for the new generation of piano house. The flip side brings an equaliy groundbreaking piano disco remix by Gomma’s own HEADMAN. The third mix is the tune which sound most like the original track: it’s the most discoish version of the track. A remix by MARAL SALMASSI – Persian DJane who lives in Germany and does a very smooth sounding disco sound. THIS SINGLE IS ONE OF THE BEST GOMMA SINGLES EVER!
