Mr. Munk hasn’t released anything since his last EP on parisian label Correspondant two years ago. He only co-produced records for Toy Tonics artists (and is working on a Neo-Jazz/ Kraut solo album). But he also teamed up with Paul Pötsch. Frontman of leading German indierock band Trümmer. Together they are working on a couple of German indiedisco songs. Great stuff in the making.

As a little appetizer they made a freaky track called “UFO” for the “KEINE BEWEGUNG 2″ compilation of Berlin label STAATSAKT.
A compilation that portraits the new German No Wave, Punkfunk and Indiedisco scene. There is a lot happening in the german underground. Great stuff.
PÖTSCH & MUNK will have more in 2018. #MakeGermanDiscoGreatAgain

The last two Munk releases (on Correspondant and Local Talk) already showed the new side of Mathias Modica’s musical output.
Instrumental, hypnotic, yet funky and tribal mid tempo tracks with almost no vocals.
Now Mr. Munk takes it a few steps further. He is flying his Techno into a Sun Ra Space. „The Bolero Bunuel“ is based on a jazzfunk bassline and some live drumming. The melodies remind of some strange arabian sci-fi things. „The Naked Baam“ reminds of the first Motorbass tracks, back from Paris 1995. Filterfunk! „The Oboe Onyx“ – Boards of Canada could have been somewhere in the studio when this was made. The beat is weird… not quantized. The classical instruments and melodic lines remind of some compositions of late Ligeti or P‰rt. This new Munk EP comes out with Remixes from Lauer and Red Axes.

Horse Meat Disco are steady supporters of Gomma since a long time.
The 100% Gomma series invites friends of the label to do a own selection of the Gomma catalogue. In form of a DJ MIX and a compilation.
The last mix (2013) came courtesy of Jacques Renault. He created a cosmic balearic selection. His compilation has been no.1 of JUNO Download house albums charts for six weeks. The new one by Severino used some of the more energetic tracks of the catalogue: Luke Solomon, Morgan Geist, DJ Kaos, Dimitri From Paris, Munk, HessIsMore and many more
Lot of new tracks – but also older tracks – that still sound fresh.
You can get the whole mix as a one hour mixed podcast or as several tracks.

Get it on Juno Download

Munk’s last single for his release on Jennifer Cardini’s Correspondant label just came out on vinyl. The lead track gets heavy support. From Soul Clap to &ME, Axel Boman or Massimiliano Pagliara… so much love for the song.
So we decided to make a video. Shot in the dirty Sonora Market from Mexico City. Filmed by Kapote.

This vinyl EP is a collaboration between Paris label Correspondant and Germany’s Gomma records.
Remixes by Los Angeles’ finest psychedelic electronic producer Secret Circuit (Beats in Space records) and German shooting star Lauer (partner of Gerd Janson of Tuff City Kids).

Why this EP?

Gomma has a long history with the Paris scene. Mathias ‘Munk’ Modica who runs Gomma (and sublabel Toy Tonics) has been living in France for many years. He worked with many parisian artists from DJ Chloe (on Munk’s first album „Aperitivo“ 2004) to the Ed Banger Crew or Black Strobe. Probably apart of Berlin there is no city in the world that saw more Gomma events than Paris. Seems only a project with Jennifer Cardini missed. So Jennifer invited Mathias last year to send over tracks. Decision was made fast. And so „Wurlitzer Wank“ and The „Bösus Bounce“ came out on Correspondant.

The other 2 tracks will come out on Gomma digitally later this year. For now: vinyl only.

The music: You can somehow call it influenced by psychedelic ideas and the 1990ies Detroit electro funk sound of labels like red planet or Gladio. Analogue instruments, funk loops made on a MPC and weird, sick synthesizer melodies. Reminds of the early Munk productions that had no vocals.

Here comes – a bit late, as always – Mathias Modica’s winter mixtape. But as we know he was busy with other stuff: Releasing two EPs on Local Talk and Correspondant and producing a lot of new music that will come out in 2016. On this mixtape the Munk man serves a quite easy trip through
current soulful house and broken beat goodies. Starting with Tom Misch and Jack J, in a nasty red light bar mood and ending in a trippy space with Berlin’s very own Montezuma’s Revenge and some ethnic downtempo music.

Mr. Munk has been doing a lot of new music recently. Two new EPs will come out on labels of our friends.
The first one just got released on Jennifer Cardini’s great Correspondant label. It’s called „The Wurlitzer Wank“ and includes two new tracks and a remix by Secret Circuit (Beats in Space).
It’s not the first time Munk works with the parisian scene. Already on the first Munk album „Aperitivo“ (2004) he worked with DJ Chloe. Later there were Munk collabos with the Ed Banger crew, I’m A Cliche and other people from the parisian scene. So this new collabo made totally sense in the Munk history.

Get it on Beatport

The next Munk thing will come out on Local Talk in december.
