When a band is selected “Top 10 live acts of the year” by glitterballnyc it really has to be something special. That’s the case for Hess Is More. A transatlantic music ensemble. 7 international musicians around Danish composer and drummer Mikkel Hess.

Hess is a composer of music for film, theatre and ballet. Latest he was nominated for the prestigious Robert Award and Carl Award with his score for the feature film “When Animals Dream“.
Bearsong and Youarenotaprimate were arranged during the group’s residency at Clocktower Gallery in downtown New York. Recorded Live to Tape and mixed by Andrew Raposo (Midnight Magic /Hercules & Love Affair / DFA) at Midnight Sun Studios in Greenpoint.

These seven musicians, with their unique instrumentation and unorthodox arrangements create a very danceable yet at times puzzling sound. Melodies with unusual developments, basslines that have their roots in late 1970 jazz funk. Youarenotaprimate is an orgy of No Wave drums, Afrobeat-bassline and distorted rhode pianos. The lyrics can haunt you for days: „You are not a primate, you are not Maharishi either, but in between there is someone called yourself“. Hess Is More have a hugh fanbase already in New York’s undergound music scene. People like James Murphy of DFA, Pitchfork’s favourite avantgarde pop musician Lorna Dune and Lowbrow Reader editor Jay Ruttenberg are big fans of their live shows. Pips from Petty Nobles Collective just wrote this nice quote: “I believe I just witnessed the future of live dance music“.

A vinyl with remixes by Dimitri From Paris, Pollyester and Williamsbourg’s hidden star Lorna Dune will come out in september.

Friends of Gomma. Here is something we never did before: For free we give you a Live recording of a recent WhoMadeWho concert. Their infamous gig they did at Germany’s coolest Music Festival: Melt! Festival. There, WhoMadeWho are already a household name as they play the festival every year. This year, they even composed the “Melt Anthem” called Gigantische Stahlgiganten which will be on the official compilation. Now check this out: courtesy of Red Bull Music Academy here comes the recording of their live gig at this year’s Melt Festival. Gigantic!

It was great…the Phenomenal Handclap Band rocked in a hippy style, Mustang played the avant disco, Moullinex brought some breakdowns, Telonius and Munk made the girls sweat….let’s say: it was great at Gomma Super Show in Paris last saturday…here are some pics.

Finally the German tour of The Phenomenal Handclap Band has begun! We’re looking forward to their gigs and also to the Gomma parties in Berlin on Friday and in Paris on Saturday. Check out the full list of gigs here:

After nearly one year of pausing the Munk band hits the road again. Three test gigs playing the material of the new Munk EP which will be released in September. (The single La Musica comes in June). Together with German IndieRock Stars Die Sterne they will play Dresden on Sunday …Berlin on Monday …Hamburg on Wednesday…this week! Don’t miss.. so much fun.

Exciting news, there will be a new tour by The Phenomenal Handclap Band in Europe around May and June 2010! Next to some festivals they will also play a couple of locations around Germany and at the Gomma show in Paris on 5 June. Here’s the full list of confirmed gigs so far:
